P. Calavara does Josef Lada's version
of Hašek's Good Soldier Švejk #1-3
P. Calavara does Josef Lada's version of Hašek's Good Soldier Švejk #1-3.
In Prague a couple of years back I came across and purchased a couple of small cheap prints by Josef Lada. I looked him up when I got home and
discovered that he was most famous for illustrating Jaroslav Hašek's famous anti-war novel, The Good Soldier Švejk. I eventually
got a copy of the book (750 pages plus lengthy intro/bio) and, on the last day of reading it, decided to do some drawings of Šjevk in
the style of Lada. Lada's design and drawings of the Good Soldier are indelibly linked to him and it felt like it would have been fallacy to
try to draw him in any other style. Nonetheless the novel had a profound effect upon me and I wanted to commemorate that somehow.
So there you go. These drawings were done on 11x14 bristol with ink and inkwash. I scanned the original drawings I based them upon from the book
and those images are included below.
